![]() ![]() Ham bulbulen hain iski, ye gulsitaan hamaara. We reiterate what Iqbal said a century ago, with the belief that we will some day recreate India in what Iqbal envisioned it to be. We celebrate the son of Panjab, who sang with the tongue of Lahore and the eloquence of Isfahan. On this World Urdu Day and Iqbal Day, we celebrate one of the greatest icons of Urdu poetry, Farsi poetry, philosophy, and theology that this Indian sub-continent has ever produced. ![]() A man who revisited the idea or religion, who spoke about the pain of the oppressed, who wrote for the women, farmers, laborers, and mill workers, Iqbal is synonymous with the phrase All art is political. He imagined a Hindostan that was above the idea of religion, caste, creed, and class. He spoke of vahdat (unity) in a tone that was so eloquent and powerful that even the most communal of people saw their foundations shaking. Iqbal imagined and wrote of an India that was united in differences. A man who understood the nuances of poetry, music, religion, philosophy, and theatre with such ease as if art was a word he coined in his study room.
